Ladybird wakes up while I go to Warsaw and then walk around in Komorów

Ladybird woke up and is around just now, when I prepare this post. I can not put it outside - can I? Maybe it falls asleep again?

Today I will take take you for a walk to Warsaw again and little around my place where I live -Komorów.

Temperature got up to -1C, little snow came, covering everything white.
My conscious is not well I have to confess, cos my laziness made me not winter wrapping 3 roses. What can I do? I can still do it now and hope that frost we had did not damage them.
Sometimes I keep wondering - you look for nicest kinds of plants you like and hope they will grow healthy. Just at the time when something depends on you, you don't do it. Why?
In the morning I had to go out, to the city again.
This time regular gloves will do the job.
Aslan's favourite place to sleep is the top of the sofa - most likely nobody is disturbing too much wanting to play and he can observe everything.
New year's eve was very difficult for him - he was not walking around - he was crowling! so scared of all fireworks noises. As people started already in the afternoon, Aslan wanted to hide to deepest possible hole - we spent pretty much time comforting him, covering with blankets etc. Atomic panicked only at midnight, when all explosions were strongest - he seems to be more brave cat.
Look into my eyes before you go anywhere and say you will not miss me :) - isn't it this kind of look?
Morning walks there and back already made...

Komorów is divided by railway and how to expect people to not cross it anywhere, even if there are big sings 'crossing forbidden'. How to expect people to walk 400 m further to pass it?

... so, while I walk to train station...

...some others are still {despite of snow} biking... anyone heard of winter tyres?

... some others lost their friends-cats and still looking for them...

... 30 minutes in train can be sometimes boring... you do what? watch others :)

... pigeons are better I guess... sitting higher at least might mean, that it is warmer...

old parthenosissus on the old wall remembering 2nd world war {still some bullet wholes}

... on the way back from city... while some are bored or stresses ...

... some others in Komorów decided that it is good day to cut branches of big old trees ...

That made me more alert to look around and see...

... not only beautiful red berries of cotoneaster covered with snow...

also in the place that I pass few times a week, I noticed something weird - look! there is small seedling of Pinus sylvestris finding a shelter at Betula pendula!
It is growing exactly in the place where the trunk is diving in two...

Bark of old Betula pendula is extremely beautiful - still some white, but with deep black cracks...

Some people lost their dog-friend and still looking for her...
There is one garden in the neighbourhood that looks like fairy tale garden.
Gate promises secret....
Is this just one old tree? or few of them just planted decades ago, but little bit too close?

The beauty of Buxus {lower hedge} and Taxus {higher hedge} can be truly appreciated only in the winter, when all other plants are gone and dormant.
This example is a good answer to a question why to plant evergreens in the garden.
Is this green not heart warming and reminding that green spring and summer will come again?

  1. Hi Ewa, I alsos belong to this sort of people who have a bad conscience when they think, that lazyness could possibly damage a plant (I also speak about my roses which are not yet prepared for winter. And we have winter NOW!) So what to do? I'll go and finish wrapping my rose trees on one of the next days and then I'll have a good feeling again (though perhaps the roses are already damaged now...).What are your lowest temperatures in winter? We can have till -18°C where I live, but luckily this is rather seldom!
    Thanks for the lovely tour!
Have a good time and a winter which is not too cold ;-) !!

  2. Ow.. Barbara... we can have even -33C {last time 2 years ago}. That was maximum I experienced since many years - it doesn't happen very often. When it comes it kills even 20 years old shrubs - all old branches of deutzia died - I cut it back and because the clump was very big I couldn't dig it out - luckily - mid June new stems appeared - it decided to stay with us (does it like us?). -33 is beyond our zone, which is maximum -29C.
I red your post and I remembered you, while writing :) While reading your post I thought: Ok, it is not only me :)

  3. How nice to meet you, Ewa! Thank you for coming to visit the greenwood. . . . I enjoyed then coming to see you at your website in Poland - I have actually been to Warsaw, it was 3 or 4 years ago, I think. I really enjoyed it. I remember sitting outside at a cafe in the [rebuilt] "old" town part of Warsaw. Very beautiful.

But I was visiting people who lived outside of the city, in the country, and I love your countryside there.

I hope to see you at the greenwood again soon, and I will be back here to visit you and your garden and your cat and your ladybird. . . . : )

    Best regards, queenie

  6. I still remember living in cold (Poland, Germany) colder (Sweden) and the coldest (Minnesota) climates, so, based on my experiences, please cover your roses: best on a warm sunny day. It the snow fell early, before heavy frost, they should be fine. May be not all branches, but you'll prune them in the spring anyway, won't you?
(Hope my daughter was not lazy and did not kill my favorite orange mint - since you need sidlings to propagate this mint - there are no seeds of orange mint. Will see in about a week...)

  7. Hi Ewa: thanks so much for the tour of your city. I have completely enjoyed getting to see your part of the world. The snow, the people, the neighborhood, your cats... what a gift for you to share!

I also admire your change in life-style to de-stress although I can see how that commitment would be a challenge in the winter when you can't just hop in your car and drive. Good for you for sticking with it.

    Try to stay warm.

  9. Aslan has the most incredible green eyes! Do you have more ladybugs than usual? This year, I think all the ladybugs in Connecticut came inside my house for the winter. I don't mind, but they are everywhere. One thing I loved about Poland is how old many of the buildings and walls and other things are - much older than anything in America - so beautiful.

  10. Oh, I know that look that the cats give when we leave..."what? Where are you going? Without us? How could you? " Except Spunky, who doesn't want to go anywhere and just goes has a nap til I get back.
I enjoyed the walking trip though it's sad to see the signs posted about lost animal friends. And I felt a chill thinking about bullet holes in the parthenocissus vine. Living history, indeed.

  11. Poor Aslan. Luna (our dog) knows just how he feels because she is afraid of fireworks too. She hides if there is a thunder storm too. Loved the walk through the city again. The bus ride with the legs is a funny look at a ride.

  14. Hi all...

the queen - welcome to my blog. So you have been to Poland... long trip, ha?

    Minerva,
Orange mint - sounds great :) it is very kind of you to think about me :) will you post it? or somebody is coming over to Poland?

Meems - yes, I was little scared of winter, but really need it. Now I even bike in -10C which I never did before. You know all this corporate chicks - elegant light suits, shoes etc. hi hi hi - this is not me anymore! now i am dressed like astronaut and keep wondering how was I living 'BEFORE'.

    Stawberry Lane - thank you.

Victoria - that was the only ladybug around since summer :) no invasion :)

Jodi - 'living story' well told. I am always amazed, that cats have their own characters and each is different - they look like furry toys, so how is that possible. So many characters on earth?

Lisa - I never saw any animal scared of fireworks that much as Aslan was - he was suffering since 31 till 2nd.
Poor Luna - has she any trauma?

Frances and Robin - welcome to my blog and thank you for linking :)

  15. What a nice long post Ewa, I enjoyed coming with you to Warsaw as I have never been there before, nor in Komorow. ;-)

The Bliss team understands why Aslan and later Atomic too, were so scared of the fireworks. This year there was very bad as there was so much noise going on. Usually the Bliss team is not scared of fireworks but this was too much!

BTW you can still wrap up your roses if you are worried about heavy frost.

How sad that those people had lost their pets, I see this over here too and am glad that all my kitties are safe and sound.

I have linked with you too!

    Have a lovely weekend!

  18. Ewa: Such a nice post! I enjoyed the train ride and the walk in the yard! All of it really! I know what you mean about garden tasks. I just got the wrapping around the base of some fruit trees so the mice will not girdle them! Still have to put one table away! Nice kitty!

  19. Hi Ewa.
How nice to do a winter walk in Warzawa with you - while sitting here in the warmth with a fire running in the hearth :-)

I was in Oslo this week, and a ladybug just woke up in the bathroom of the hotel where I live. I saw it as a sign of luck.

  21. Ewa I so enjoyed this walk with you to see all the white again as our snow here in Canada has melted due to rain and warmer temperatures! Your kitties are gorgeous...their eyes!!
I can see why you want the ladybug to go back to sleep as she would surely perish outdoors! hugs aNNa
